A lot of learning happens before a child has words A lot of learning happens before a child has words for what they’re discovering.

Sometimes we get to see it in the pause, the repetition, or the small change they make the next time they try.

That’s one of the things I love most about watching children play — noticing the thinking that sits underneath what looks so simple on the surface. The experimenting, problem-solving, predicting, adjusting, and trying again.

Not every moment needs to be directed or turned into a lesson. Sometimes our role is simply to make space, stay close, and pay attention to what they’re already showing us.

There is so much learning in the in-between moments.

🎃 Spooky Pumpkin Fizz 🎃 A little Halloween scienc 🎃 Spooky Pumpkin Fizz 🎃

A little Halloween science + sensory play all in one! 👻✨

To make the fizzy pumpkins:
🎃 Mix water with orange food colouring
🎃 Add baking soda until it forms a thick paste
🎃 Spoon into silicone pumpkin molds
🎃 Add a little sparkle ✨
🎃 Freeze until solid

Then we added vinegar to our cauldron, placed everything in the water table, tossed in whatever spooky treasures we could find… and let the fizzing begin! 🧪🕷️🦇

Such a simple way to bring a little science into seasonal play — watching, predicting, experimenting and repeating it over and over again.

Save this one for spooky season! 🎃

Here’s the cutest autumn art idea to try with your little ones (or honestly, just for yourself ✨).

Grab some aluminum foil, cover it with washable markers in all your favorite fall shades 🍁🍎🎃. Lightly mist with a water bottle 💦, then press your paper template on top. Lift it up and ta-da — you’ve made a magical fall-inspired masterpiece! 🍂🖌️

It’s quick, simple, and gives the prettiest watercolor effect without the mess. Perfect for cozy afternoons at home 🍂☕.

✨ Save this idea for your next craft day and tag me if you try it — I’d love to see your creations!

Freeze up some “spider eggs” by popping plastic spiders into balloons, filling with water, and freezing overnight. ❄️ The next day, peel off the balloon and toss them into the tub for some creepy-cool bath time play! 👻💦

A little spooky, a lot of fun — perfect for extending bath time during Halloween season! 🎃🕸️

👻✨ Flying Ghost Science! ✨👻 This spooky science a 👻✨ Flying Ghost Science! ✨👻

This spooky science activity will have your little ones giggling with excitement! Grab an old film canister, fill it halfway with water, and drop in a small piece of Alka-Seltzer. Quickly close the lid, give it a little shake (with your kiddo’s help!), and watch your ghost fly! 💨🎃

💡 How to make it:
• Decorate your film canister with a black permanent marker — draw ghostly faces! 👀
• Fill halfway with water.
• Drop in an Alka-Seltzer tab piece.
• Close it tight and get ready for lift-off! 🚀

This simple Halloween STEM activity introduces early science concepts like chemical reactions, pressure, and cause and effect — all through play!

A drying rack… but make it a learning activity 💦 A drying rack… but make it a learning activity 💦

We added MAGNA-TILES @magnatiles , grabbed a stack of UNO cards and took turns choosing a colour. Whatever colour was picked, they had to find the matching tiles and spray them with water.

Such a simple setup, but it works on colour recognition, visual scanning, hand-eye coordination and fine motor strength with every squeeze of the spray bottle.

You could also extend the play by using the numbers on the UNO cards @uno — pull a card and spray the matching colour that many times to add counting and one-to-one correspondence.

Sometimes the best learning activities come from looking at everyday materials a little differently.

🍏 Welcome to Our Orchard 🍎 ✨ Fizzy Apple Tree Sci 🍏 Welcome to Our Orchard 🍎

✨ Fizzy Apple Tree Science Fun ✨

We’re learning all about orchards, so we made our very own fizzy apple tree! 🌳🍏🍎

Here’s how we did it:
🍎 Used baking soda for the base
🌳 Made a tree trunk from paper
🥤 Pressed the bottom of a drinking glass into the baking soda to form “apples”
🎨 Added food coloring to vinegar, then used droppers to make the magic happen…

✨ Watch the apple tree come to life as the colors fizz and bubble! Such a magical way to explore science and orchard life while having hands-on fun.

Would your little learners love this sensory + science combo? 💕
