A recycled paint board made from nothing more than A recycled paint board made from nothing more than cardboard scraps, leftover packaging, bubble wrap, egg cartons, paper tubes and paint.

I love invitations like this because there’s no “right” way to create. Children can explore how different materials hold paint, notice the textures and patterns they make, mix colours, layer marks and decide what each little piece might become.

It’s art, sensory exploration, problem solving and loose-parts play all happening together — using materials that were headed for the recycling bin.

Save your scraps. Hand over the paint. See what happens. ♻️🎨

A little letter matching with a spooky twist. 🕷️ A little letter matching with a spooky twist. 🕷️

I turned a piece of cardboard into a spider web, added a letter to the centre of each spider using dot stickers, then placed the matching letters onto toy cars.

The challenge? Zoom each car across the web and find the spider with its matching letter.

Such a simple way to bring early literacy into play while also encouraging letter recognition, visual scanning, matching, fine motor control, and hand-eye coordination.

Sometimes changing how a child practises a skill is all it takes to make familiar learning feel completely new again.

To recreate this activity, use a large ziplock bag, remove the logo with an alcohol swab or nail polish remover. Take a permanent marker and draw spiders. Add hair gel and googly eyes! For older kiddos, you can put a number on the spider and work on counting/addition/subtraction. Have fun! 🕷️

“Children are building themselves in moments adult “Children are building themselves in moments adults are tempted to overlook.”

It’s easy to notice the big things — the first word, writing their name, learning to count, finally mastering something they’ve been working toward.

But development is happening long before the finished skill shows up.

It’s in the child who watches for ten minutes before joining in.
The one who repeats the same play again and again.
The child who changes their plan when something doesn’t work.
The conversations happening beside the water table.
The questions that seem to come out of nowhere.

So much of childhood development happens in these ordinary moments.

Children are gathering information, testing ideas, building language, learning how their bodies work, figuring out relationships and slowly making sense of the world around them.

Not every moment needs to look productive to be valuable.

Sometimes our job is simply to notice what’s already happening.

To recreate this activity, use any small container (we used 5 oz plastic juice containers), fill them halfway with vinegar and add sparkles and food colouring. Shake it up! Then, add a scoop (about one tablespoon) of baking soda. Watch the ✨magic✨ happen. We added spiders and eyeballs for extra fun! Enjoy! 😘

Summer may be coming to an end, but outdoor play d Summer may be coming to an end, but outdoor play doesn’t need to.

We often associate being outside with warm weather, but children benefit from outdoor play across every season. Time outside gives children space for bigger movement, changing sensory experiences, appropriate risk-taking, problem-solving and the kind of open-ended play that naturally follows their curiosity.

And as the seasons change, so does the learning.

Leaves fall. Temperatures shift. Puddles freeze. Shadows change. New sounds, textures and questions begin to appear. The same outdoor space can offer an entirely different experience from one month to the next.

From an educator lens, I don’t see outdoor time as a break from learning.

It is learning.

So while summer may be ending, we’ll keep heading outside — just with a few more layers. 🍂
